engraver, was a son of Samuel Calvert and his wife, Emma née Lake. Raised in Melbourne, he was a student at National Gallery of Victoria’s Design School in 1882 and joined his father’s engraving business in Little Collins Street (c.1886). He took over the engraving side of the business while Samuel worked as the artist of the firm. When his father returned to England, William remained in Melbourne and continued the business.
