professional photographer and draper, was listed as a photographer of Hindley Street, Adelaide, in 1867-68, and of Sturt Street in 1872. In the interval he was at Port Elliott, South Australia (1869-70). At different times Machan seems to have been in partnership with his brother and with Robert S. Stacy ; he also had a drapery store. James Machan’s date of arrival at South Australia is unknown, but it was some time before 9 September 1862 when he married Ellen Colville, his second wife, in Adelaide.
