James Archer kept a small sketchbook (c.1861-63) that consists mainly of drawings of people, most depicted in profile, including his brother, fellow artist Alexander Archer.

James’s small sketchbook (c.1861-63, ML) consists mainly of drawings of people, most depicted in profile. A caricature of Alexander is annotated 'Sandy as he appears after a champagne supper’. James lived in Australia for several years and died at Larvik on 10 June 1919.
