Painter, printmaker and designer , Haxton worked through the 1930's as a commercial artist in both Sydney and London. In 1943 she won the Sulman Prize and in 1986 was awarded an AM for printmaking.

When Margo Lewers arrived in London in March 1934, Elaine Haxton met her and found her a room in Kensington. Haxton was a key contact for Lewers in London at the time, linking her to others working in design and advertising. Haxton travelled in Germany that summer with Eileen McGrath and Margo and Gerald Lewers.
