Burkitt was a prolific watercolourist who made studies of the various Victorian districts in which he was stationed as a telegraph operator. He exhibited in Victoria and at the London International Exhibition in 1862. His grandson donated a collection of 21 watercolours to 16 Victorian Municipal councils.
