He set up his own studio at 135 Clarendon Street, Emerald Hill (South Melbourne) in 1868, then was in partnership with Frederick P. Stevenson at 57 Bourke Street East in 1869-70. Benson & Stevenson were listed at 108 Elizabeth Street in 1872-79 with a break at 3 Collins Street West, Melbourne, in 1873.
